Deliver Disturbing Information

Probably one of the most nerve cracking thing to do in a reading is how-to "gently" break disturbing news to a querent especially if you know s/he would take it hardly. This is such a popular subject that I decided to write a list of do's and don'ts based on my own experience and some from comments generated from our discussion at our message board.

Do's
  1. Remain objective at all times.
  2. Be gentle and tactful in your approach. Use metaphors that can be loosely interpreted by anyone and let the querent process the information on their own.
  3. Be honest. Remember that when a person comes to a reading, s/he is in doubt and is seeking for clarifications. The querent has the right to hear the truth.
  4. Your role is to serve. Not save. The querent is responsible of how s/he chooses to take the information from their reading.
  5. If you see something absolutely aweful (eg., death, child abuse, etc), ask yourself what does this querent needs to hear from the information. The details of the information may not be important afterall. Access your intuition and ask yourself what is the most important piece of information that the querent can learn from the reading.
  6. Always focus on the positive aspects rather than the negative -even if all you see are negative. No one deserves to leave a reading session with feelings of apprehension. The purpose of getting a reading is so that people can have a sense of self-empowerment.
  7. Remind your querent free will rules supreme and that their future is not carved out in stone.
  8. Remind your querent that you can be wrong.

Don'ts
  1. Don't decide for your querent which any event is good/bad. What may appear to you as harmful may turn out to be a blessing in disguise for the querent.
  2. Don't inappropriately ask your querent to verify sensitive/personal information. If you're correct, the querent may feel invaded or exposed. If you're wrong, the information may damage your accountability as reader and integrity of your client.
  3. Don't delve further into personal privacy of the querent even if s/he is willing to openly discuss with you. It is important to know what your limits are as a reader. In such cases, you should refer the querent to seek appropriate professionals for further assistance.
  4. No gossiping your readings with your family and friends. All readings must be treated as strict confidentiality.
  5. Never solely focus on the negative aspects of the reading.
  6. It is advisable not to report anything regarding querent's health/illness. These areas should be handled by qualified health care professionals.
  7. Don't do a third party reading unless with permission.
  8. Don't be afraid to say, "I am not getting anything" or "I'm picking up conflicting messages". No reader is expected to be perfect and 100% accurate in their readings. In any event, our interpretations of our intuitive data is highly subjective to human errors.
